I love going to fairs in New England.  Many of them happen during the late summer and autumn just as the seasons are changing and the fall foliage is starting to burst with color.  One of my annual favorites is the Woodstock Fair in Connecticut.  I  thoroughly enjoy looking at all the vintage tractors they have on display.

There is nothing quite like a fair... the candy apples, cotton candy, midway rides, Ferris wheel, and the farm animals.  The sights, the sounds, the smells of a carnival or fair... so unique and transcending.  It's a chance to take it all in and enjoy your surroundings... have a little fun in the process.

The antique tractors always captivate my interest... so much patina and so much color.  The level of detail you can get is amazing while photographing old tractors.

This Massey Harris Mustang tractor was no exception.  This tractor had been beautifully restored and painted.  Great care and detail were taken by its owner to bring this old workhorse back to life.  This antique Mustang tractor was number 200 of 2,680 Massey-Harris Mustangs built in 1953.  I thought the grille looked so awesome through my wider-angle lens.  It looks like a skeleton or a human rib cage that that juts out to protect the inner organs and workings of this classic tractor.

Below are just a few of my latest photography creations:
A summertime, infrared landscape showing the beautiful nature surrounding Saint Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts. Infrared photography can make trees look snowy in the middle of the summer. The cloud wisps reach into the sky and beyond; heavenly light shines down on the earth. Infrared photography, landscape prints, black and white canvas prints.
The Stowe Community Church in Stowe, Vermont. This church surrounded by a lush and green, summer foliage and rustic mountains. The church is one of the most famous churches in Vermont and New England for that matter. In the distance, you can see parts of Main Street and Maple Street in Stowe. The Stowe town common is a quaint and charming little spot, a quite little slice of heaven. Town of Stowe is well know for its display of fall foliage colors during the autumn season. This Vermont landscape photograph shows how lush Stowe & Vermont can be during the summer.
A colorful collection of kayaks and canoes resting in a Cape Cod salt marsh overlooking the scenic Salt Pond Bay in Eastham, Massachusetts New England. These brightly-colored boats give hope and dreams of adventure on a cloudy summer day.

Description

A turquoise and white boat mooring rests on a Cape Cod Bay sandbar during low tide on a summer evening. In this black and white seascape print, I used selective coloring to emphasize the colors on the buoy. A mooring chain and boat rope keep this buoy anchored as a lifeline for a sailboat. This photograph was taken in Brewster, Massachusetts MA Cape Cod New England.
A vast, summer landscape that encompasses Stow Mountain Resort, Mount Mansfield, and Mt. Mansfield State Park in Stowe, Vermont - New England. To the left, light rays stream down through the clouds in the distance.

I was very fortunate to spend an evening at Webster Lake during the Independence Day fireworks a few weeks ago.  Before the 4th of July fireworks show happened, I had the pleasure of catching a nice and relaxing sunset over the lake.  The boats were lining up and getting positioned for the fireworks display; luckily, I was able to capture a couple of nice shots.  Webster Lake in Webster, Massachusetts, New England.  Lake Chaubunagungamaug and Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagung

Leaving the Comfort Zone

Sometimes you just have to leave your comfort zone a little bit.  Maybe it's to do something new or create a photograph with an unusual idea behind it.  This photograph embodies all those thoughts.  I wanted something gritty, focused around pure numbers... but something that could also have alternate meanings or innuendos.  As always, you the viewer decides :)

Cape Cod & Maine

Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Maine have always been two of my favorite spots in New England.  I practically grew up on The Cape, spending summers and off season weekends down there a lot when I was growing up.  Arriving on Cape Cod always makes me feel like I am coming home... maybe it was my home in a past life.  I also love the York, Wells, Ogunquit, Kennebunk, and Kennebunkport areas in Maine.  Here are a few of my most recent photographs and prints from Cape Cod and Maine:
Sunny, vivid seascape photograph of a quiet, little beach in Chatham, Massachusetts, MA Cape Cod. This beach is located near Allen Point, between Chatham Harbor and Pleasant Bay. The Atlantic Ocean and the Chatham Lighthouse are not far from this scenic beach.
A peaceful July sunset over scenic Lewis Bay in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, MA, 02673. Quintessential, summertime photograph of Cape Cod during the peak of the summer season. The boats are all moored in the harbor as the sun dips well below the horizon. Hyannis Port is also part of the silhouetted horizon. Cape Cod Prints and Wall Decor.
A July, landscape photograph of the Margo Gelb beach cabin in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Cape Cod. This dune shack is the essence of simple, rustic living. A perfect spot nestled in the dunes for that beach retreat or artist sabbatical. A great addition to your collection of beach house decor. Please visit my Fine Art America or Pixels websites for more Cape Cod beach photography.
"Nauset Light Infrared" fine art photography and art prints by Luke Moore. I pulled out my infrared camera to capture Nauset Beach Light on a mostly cloudy day in March. I wanted to express some character and begin to tell a story through this Nauset Lighthouse photograph. Infrared photography lends itself very well to creating a surreal, storytelling environment. I can't help but wonder how many shipwrecks and tragedies this lighthouse witnessed and/or helped to prevent.

Completed in 1838, Nauset Beach Lighthouse Station (The Three Sisters) was the first lighthouse station for Eastham, Massachusetts in Cape Cod. The Three Sisters consisted of three 15-foot brick towers each with a light on top. In 1892, these three towers were replaced with wooden towers and moved back from the eroding coastline. In 1911, more erosion caused one of the towers to be moved back again and two to be sold at auction. In 1923, the wooden lighthouse was retired and a new lighthouse was commissioned. The present day lighthouse is one of the towers from Chatham Light in Chatham, MA and was moved to Eastham in 1923. The Nauset Lighthouse has since been moved back several times due to dune erosion. For more historical information please visit the Nauset Light Preservation Society website.
A vintage style, black and white, seascape photograph of Nauset Beach Light in Eastham, Massachusetts, Cape Cod. In this lighthouse print, Nauset Lighthouse is framed by a Cape Cod National Seashore sign displaying hashtags. The lighthouse is brought to life with some selective color in this monochrome image. I waited for the red beacon to flash and I took the photo. To the left of the lighthouse you can see the historical lightkeeper's home, and to the right you can also see the little, white, oil house. Mostly cloudy, seascape photograph of the Lobster Point Lighthouse on the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine, ME. During a spring morning, the sun peeks through just a little bit to illuminate the sky and the white, frothy water. The Margin is a walkway that spans a scenic portion of Maine's coast and the Atlantic Ocean. The Marginal way was started in 1925 with a donation of land made by Josiah Chase. The walkway has been preserved and managed by Ogunquit’s Marginal Way Committee with help from a non-profit called the Marginal Way Preservation Fund.

I felt like breaking all the composition rules with this Marginal Way bench photograph in Ogunquit, Maine. I love how the bench and the cloud patterns support the dynamic, diagonal horizon.

"Nice Photo!  You Must Have an Expensive Camera?"

"Nice Photo!  You Must Have an Expensive Camera?"
"Nope."

Actually I have two older digital cameras.  The one on the left is a Nikon D5000 that I bought in 2010 and is only 12 megapixels. The one on the right is a Nikon CoolpixA and that one is only 16 megapixels.  Both of these cameras will produce a high quality 36" print.  I have 36" prints hanging in my house and they look awesome!  The CoolpixA will go up to a 48" print.  Of course the caveats are that the image has to be sharp, free of camera motion blur, and free of extreme visible noise.

A tripod can be a great investment to the quality of your photographs or it can open up the door to low light opportunities or long exposure opportunities.

Lens:

I've always felt that one of the most important pieces in the equation is the lens.  The lens is extremely important.  I prefer to use prime lenses because I love the quality of the images that they produce.  Means I can't zoom in or out while standing in one spot... it's essentially a fixed view or fixed focal length.  I have to move my feet and change location in order to "zoom" in or out... sometimes that is not always possible.

Prime lenses (fixed focal length lenses) help you to really focus on your composition and the elements in your photo and how they are aligned or structured.   I've been using my 35mm Nikon lens for many years now.   I purchased it back in 2012 for $199.  Certainly got my mileage out of it.

Editing:

Editing your photos on your computer is another very important element in the equation.  Sure you can certainly buy Photoshop and drop a chunk of money.  But do you really need to?  Most of my editing happens on free programs such as Nikon VeiwNX2, GIMP, and Photoscape.  In January of 2017, I finally purchased a photo editing software (Corel PaintShop Pro for ~$90) and it does everything that I need it to do.

So in summary, you don't need expensive gear or editing programs to end up with great photos.  It's all about enjoying the process and being creative.  Some people will love your photographs and some people will hate them.   It's like anything else.

Wicked  Jeep Skull Art

2/22/2018

Around the holidays, I came up with this crazy idea for some new Jeep art.  Long story short... I took photographs of a skull and combined them with American flag, scratching texture, and trail Jeep  photographs.  I even used some Jeep grilles for the eyes.  The resulting images were pretty wild... some of them looking like robot cyborg type creatures.  I have some more unique ideas for Jeep art kicking around in my head, just haven't had the time to pull them out of there.   Enjoy!

Over the years, I have always enjoyed visiting and photographing lighthouses.  There are so many that I haven't seen yet, but hope to visit in the future.  There is always something so primitive yet majestic about lighthouses.  Simple structures made to stand the test of time.  Structures with one purpose... to save lives.   Lighthouses can be so unique with very intricate and ornate architecture.    In a way, they remind me of the old mental hospitals, each having a specific architectural style... similar to the Kirkbride buildings from the 19th century.

For the photos above, I pulled out my infrared camera.  Infrared photography dovetails perfectly with the uniqueness of each lighthouse.  Infrared can convey a ghostly, magical, otherworldly, or surreal look... which in my opinion can create the perfect artistic lighthouse atmosphere.

Most of the lighthouses that I photograph are located in New England. Places like Maine, Cape Cod, and Rhode Island.  On rare occasion , I have the opportunity to visit a place like Bermuda or the Caribbean and that is a real treat.  So please stay tuned, I'm looking forward to having more lighthouse adventures in the future.

A few of my tractor creations from this past year.  Just like my Jeep artwork, I enjoy texturing these tractor photographs with wood grain and other textures.  Infrared photography always makes these old tractors look so unique.
